But there’s something to be said about all the threads coming to a head in that finale. But we did have the option of releasing that information a little bit earlier in the season. It all came out in those last two episodes, the story of Amelia’s parentage and Pop-Pop rescuing her from Area 62. Where you actually place things within the season. The decisions you make once you’re underway (on writing the season) is how you ration the story. We knew exactly where that story was heading. Pop-Pop was the friendly woodcutter, in fairy tale trope language, who had rescued her and brought her up as his own, and that she never knew her parents. The idea was always that Amelia was looking for her parents or wants to find out who they were, and that there was a mystery surrounding them. But the relationships and the characters, by and large, stayed as originally envisioned. All the names that changed apart from Amelia, Pop-Pop, and Mucus. I posted to my Instagram a picture of a whiteboard which had our very early character relationships and sketches from which all the stories flowed. That was always our plan from the very first conception of the series. How did you and the writers develop that plot and seed it throughout the show? One of the one of the running threads that finally came to a head at the end of the season was Amelia being revealed as a Rafkonian. The three episodes that featured Lord Zedd were not part of the original plans, as an example of that. We just had to create new little scenarios to flesh out the big arcs like Lord Zedd’s arrival. The arcs across all 44 episodes are the same arcs that we had planned across 22 episodes. We did know about (the two season order) before we went into production. Otherwise, production will catch up with the writing process and you’ll run out of things to film. But you need to be at least two thirds of the way through all the scripts. And once filming starts you haven’t finished (writing) all the episodes. It takes, more than a year to write a season. After two seasons, it was decided that production of Squad would be discontinued in favor of Dino-Copter Turbo Squad, a "turbo-fied" version of Squad.SIMON BENNETT: It was made before filming started. While it did not become the smash hit they were hoping for, it still managed to revitalize the franchise, attracting some new viewers while bringing back many old fans.
Premiering in 1981, almost immediately after the cancellation of the original show, Squad was a qualified success for Entertainimation. But for the most part, the focus remained on the complex character triangle of Danny, Dino-Copter, and Dr. The goal was not to alter the Dino-Copter formula, but to grow it - the character roster was massively expanded, with many more heroes and villains added. Pre-production began immediately on a new Dino-Copter show. "We were talking about Dino-Copter, as we often do, and I realized that after all this time, you could count up every character on one hand," said Ernest Lublin. The consensus was that the core content of Dino-Copter should be kept largely intact, but that viewers had perhaps grown weary of the admittedly minimalistic content. The studio's attempt to capture a younger audience with Dino-Copter Babies had resulted in mediocre ratings, national controversy, and overall disaster. After seven seasons, viewership had stagnated and started on a steady decline.
